Common Decorating Mistakes

Blog 2

Before starting any room decorating project, familiarize yourself with these missteps that homeowners often make:

1. Buying low-quality furniture

There are plenty of ways to stretch your decorating budget, but opting for cheap and flimsy furniture is not the way to go. If you have young kids, wobbly chairs and tables can even be accidents waiting to happen. On the other hand, sturdy furniture lasts longer and can be re-purposed or re-painted in the years to come. They can even become treasured heirlooms that your kids can someday incorporate in their own homes.

2. Too much neutrals

Browns, grays, whites, or black are great neutral backgrounds to make your favorite accent colors pop all the more. Using all of these neutrals together or overdoing them in one room disrupts the harmony. Just pick one or two and combine them with a few accent colors to balance things out. Couches, beds, and majority of the walls are best kept in soothing neutrals while beddings, wall art, rugs, and pillows will bring the room to life when they are in fun colors.

3. Leaving walls bare

Walls are as much a part of the room as windows and ceilings. To make them functional, drill in hooks and floating shelves for keys, books, bags, and other personal items. To lend ambiance into the room, designate a wall to use as gallery of your favorite artwork or memorable photos of your loved ones.

4. Overlooking storage needs

Plan for storage—lots of them. You heard it. Even if you earnestly believe you have no use for bins, chests, cubbies, baskets, just buy them and find room for them. As your kids grow, they are bound to amass odds and ends that will eventually clutter up the room. By saving room for these in advance, you will be saved from re-decorating the room again later to accommodate them.
